2014 Unilorin Wins 'Most Outstanding University' Award… Best VC ever, Ambali is named 'Academic Icon'

The University of Ilorin has been awarded the 2014 “Most Outstanding University in Nigeria” by the Nigerian Association of Agricultural Students, just as the Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, was also pronounced an “Academic Icon” by the students' body.
The Awards were presented to the Vice-Chancellor last Friday (November 7, 2014) in his office by a delegation of the Students' Association drawn from various Universities across the country.
According to the Association, the two Awards were given to Unilorin and the Vice-Chancellor respectively based on the high national and international, ratings of the University as well as Prof. Ambali's outstanding contributions to the well being of Nigerian students and the education sector in general.
Presenting the award, the National President of the Association, Mr. Abioye Opeyemi Muideen, represented by Mr.  A. Adetunji, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Science Students, who led the students' delegation to the Vice-Chancellor's office, said, “Sir, you are indeed a golden fish with no hiding place; as a keen observer of your delectable and faultless records, your visionary leadership and traits are not often found amidst other Vice-Chancellors and academics in Nigeria at large.”
The student leader said that the University had particularly demonstrated rare commitment to the cause of  humanity in such areas as “standard academic calendar, infrastructural development, employment opportunities, admission on merit, information and communication technology, excellent students-management relationship, community development, youth empowerment, charity to the less privileged, as well as participation of students and staff of the University of Ilorin in national and international competitions especially in the area of research.”
He said, “We want to see this honour being bestowed on you today as a propeller and catalyst to double your efforts as an exemplary leader in your bid to advance educational, agricultural, scientific, technological and scholarly excellence and to make positive changes to this world of ours”.
“ Sir you have done your work, and that is why we students of Nigeria want to reckon with you; You are the youths ambassador; permit me to say that as far as we Nigerian students are concerned, if today, you vie for the post of President of the nation, the students are behind you,” he added.
The student leader then solicited the support of the Vice-Chancellor and the University towards the success of the forthcoming “2014 Agricultural Day” scheduled to take place at the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (Moor Plantation), Ibadan.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali, expressed appreciation to the students for the awards, saying, “We are very thankful, first, to God that gave us the opportunity to serve the nation, and to the people we are serving; because it is one thing to serve, it is another thing to be acknowledged that you are serving well. The University of Ilorin has come a long way; the road can be tough but we persevere because we have focus; we knew where we wanted to be and we still have a long way to go”.
The Vice-Chancellor said that the institution, as a foremost University over the years, has become the toast of admission seekers and their parents and even the Federal Government, as a result of her consistent academic calendar, discipline and for providing quality education to everyone, just as he lamented that many students fail to secure admission into the institution because of limited carrying capacity.
Prof. Ambali said, “Along the way, of course we are bound to disappoint a few people, more especially the teeming youths in Nigeria; we are not happy to do that, we wish we had a lot of facilities that can accommodate as many people as possible but if we have to do that at this moment we will be compromising standards and that is why out of so many qualified candidates we can only admit ten percent or less.”
The Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Obafemi, thereafter presented souvenirs to the students, who continually sang the praises of the University of Ilorin helmsman and members of his management team.
Other Principal Officers present at the event were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. N.Y.S. Ijaiya; the Dedputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Y. Fakunle; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. G. Olatunji; the Bursar, Mr. Saka Yusuf; and the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi.
Also present were the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Abayomi; the Sub-Dean, Student Affairs Unit, Dr.  A. Yusuf, the Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun and the President, Unilorin Students Union, Mr. A. Ishowo.
