The
University of Ilorin has entered into separate discussions with two
private estate developers - Crossgate Designs and Hadrat Building and
Estate Management Services - for the construction of 6, 000-bed hostels
on campus on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) agreement.
While Crossgate is proposing to build a 5, 000 bed hostel, Hadrat is planning a 1,000 bed hostel.
The representative of Crossgate, Mr.
Abdurauf Ojo, who is a 1996 graduate of the University, disclosed that
the company intends to do the project in phases, saying that 200 bed
spaces would be completed by February next year while the whole project
would be completed by 2016.
The Hadrat Building and Estate
Management Services presented a similar proposal through its Project
Manager, Mr. Z. Oladotun, who said that his company has an impressive
track record, which attests to expertise in Civil Engineering in
Nigeria. He also said that his company was ready to comply with the
regulations of the University.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor of
the University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who was represented by the
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. (Mrs.) N. Y. S. Ijaiya,
appreciated the investors, noting that the University is in need of
accommodation for its teeming students population and all that the
investors have to do is to concur with the rules and regulations of the
University.
In his remarks, the University Director
of Physical Planning Unit, Engr. Ademola Adesiyun, said that the
University is ready to take the developers to the site as soon as they
submit the drawings of their proposed buildings, which must include the
electrical design.
Engr. Adesiyun noted that the University
has a standard Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for all its friends so
that the University will deal with each one of its partners on a
uniform platform.
The Director also disclosed that the
University does not enter into a partnership for a hostel accommodation
that is less than 200 bed spaces, which must be completed within a year
because the institution does not like having vacant lands around. He
stressed that the University is always keen about the quality of its
buildings because the structures are public facilities.
In another development, the University
has also begun discussions with an agricultural company, Deen Crowns
Farms and Dairy, for the establishment of a plantain plantation on
campus.
In his own presentation, Mr. Hussain
Faizudeen, the Farm Manager of Deen Crowns Farms and Dairy, said that
his organisation is proposing to establish a plantain plantation on the
University campus and explained that this was the first time the
company was doing such project though they rare cattle in Ogun State.
Responding again to this proposal, the
Director of the Physical Planning Unit (PPU), engr. Adesiyun noted that
the University does not lease out lands for more than five years because
it keeps developing.
